“Caring for Our Heritage” Project is supported by Lord Wilson Heritage Trust and coordinated by the Centre of Architectural Research on Education, Elderly, Environment and Excellence Ltd. (CARE). Collaborators include Antiquities and Monuments Office, Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council, Subsidized Primary Schools Council, Hong Kong Special Schools Council, academics and Hong Kong Institute of Architects.
Students from 19 primary and secondary schools participated in the Project in 2003.
Seven heritage sites, including Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Former Marine Police Headquarters, Hong Kong Observatory, Central Police Station, Shel Kip Mei Estate, North Kowloon Magistracy, and Yi Tai Study Hall were selected for studies.
The Project aims to provide an integrated media of learning for primary and secondary school students via a series of interactive workshops. The Heritage Visits and Creative Workshops equip students with fundamental knowledge of architectural elements and enhance their understanding of the historical, cultural and aesthetic values as well as the social, cultural and economic changes of our architectural heritage. Participating students become “Ambassadors of Heritage” and promote heritage education and conservation in our community. The creative workshops also inspire students to develop creative transformation proposals on conservation of the historical buildings in Hong Kong . Travelling exhibitions of works and proposals from all participating schools were held in 2004, and the whole series of events had finally been documented and distributed to schools in Hong Kong, collaborating bodies, educational organizations, government departments, and other related institutions both locally and overseas.
